that romney's favorables were not higher or there wasn't more of a change. the nbc news/marist poll october 3rd, romney, 42%, unfavorables 51%. now favorables are 44%, unfavorables 50%. that's within margin of error. effective i will no change, was surprising given the debate performance. >> the data are very clear, national data and individual state level data that we're seeing. and there has been movement. the race has changed and it is much more competitive than it was ten days ago, much more competitive. now the movement in ohio, the romney movement has been weaker than it was nationally or in places like virginia, florida, or colorado. and i think part of that is the obama campaign did a very good job early on airing ads early, focusing on ohio and delivering a message and defining mitt romney. they did not do that as well in the other states and frankly some of the other states have a more fundamental republican bend. it's true, the early obama ads about romney defining him, his wealth, i think it worked. the romney folks have a longer way to go. i should point out, alex, that it is pos

romney is seeing a bump in the polls and in some states is eating nearly ahead. by dint will try to turn this around -- -- biden will try to turn this around, and the burden is on ryan to keep romney's bounce here alive for a few more days until the president and mitt romney face off again next week. that is the biggest reason i think that is a big reason why this does matter. this is the first or maybe the only campaign where one side is campaigning against the policies of the other party's president as much as they are against the presidential nominee. paul ryan and his budget proposals are a flash point in this campaign, so it is unique in that sense because by then -- biden will be hammering paul ryan in the gop ticket on his proposal and on long-term fiscal issues. >> you framed it this way -- in 2008 gentlemen joe debated sarah palin, and you are wondering if scranton joe will show up for tonight's debate. >> sources i talked to on both sides of the aisle say this will be an aggressive, forward-a leading joe biden, someone who will really want to frame a negative message against ro

this poll this is a recent poll that shows more americans trusting obama over romney on foreign policy. do you think, though, that maybe, maybe team romney senses an opportunity, an opening here? >> yes, they definitely sense an opening as a result of what happened in benghazi, libya. i think the president has been popular as far as foreign policy is concerned as he got all the u.s. troops out of iraq, no more u.s. troops in iraq. americans are war weary, if you will, he's got a timeline to getting all u.s. troops out of afghanistan. but probably much more important than that, brooke, is that he managed to kill bin laden. that is something very, very popular. so i was a little surprised that romney went after the president in this speech today on iraq, because getting u.s. troops out of iraq has generally been popular, though romney did make valid points. the iraqi government, nuri al maliki is moving closer and closer to iran, it's facilitating iranian supplies of weapons to syria. this is not a good aftermath of all the years of struggle in iraq for sure. getting americans out of iraq th
